Good news for fans of transporting goods in style – the third-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter goes on sale here in June. It’s got big boots to fill as the last two were named Ireland’s Van of the Year when they were introduced. At the very least there’s plenty of choice. Six body variants, three body heights, five weight classes, five wheelbases, three diesel engines, the option of front, rear and four-wheel drive, and a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes means you’ve got more combination choices than a trip to Penneys (1,700 to be exact).

While vans typically aren’t best described as ‘technologically advanced’, the new Sprinter is a little different. A number of items will be included in the latest version, including Mercedes PRO Connect and the company’s new finger-touch infotainment system, MBUX, which give drivers real-time information and allows owners to monitor their fleet performance.

Other features to note include a load area that’s been reduced by 80mm (increases volume), self-arresting hinges on the rear door which means you can open and close them with just one hand, as well as a number of driver assistance systems migrating from passenger cars.

Prices have yet to be revealed, though the outgoing version starts from €30,540 including VAT and VRT. For those of you who are trying to do their bit for the environment or simply cut costs, an electric version known as the eSprinter will likely be released in 2019.
